Aoronary Artery Disease and Medical Nutrition Therapy
For many years now the medical nutrition community has known that a diet reduced in total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol as well as moderate weight loss when needed help prevent or delay cardiovascular disease. Unfortunately, many individuals still do not embrace these lifestyle modifications and obesity and high serum cholesterol levels remain, resulting in Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) being the leading cause of death in the U.S. Most animal proteins, still the preferred source of protein by many people, contain moderate to significant amounts of the offending dietary fats. Whey protein on the other hand contains complete, high quality protein, without the unhealthy fats associated with animal proteins. It also provides significant amounts of calcium and potassium, two minerals positively implicated in the DASH DIET for the control of high blood pressure11. Some research has shown that whey protein may help with weight loss, although more studies are needed to determine the mechanisms involved. Naturally low in calories, whey protein leaves room in the diet for the inclusion of plant fats, such as nuts, oils and cold water fish which help reduce heart disease.
